Tobacco Prevention & Education Programs

BEAT (Becoming Educated About Tobacco)

BEAT is TLC’s program to educate students on the risks of using tobacco products. It is yet another one of TLC’s innovative programs. TLC, along with Montgomery County Intermediate Unit No. 23, was selected by the Montgomery County Health Department to work with schools as part of the County’s Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program. BEAT is designed to work with schools in providing tobacco prevention and cessation services to their students.

BEAT assist schools in addressing student tobacco use by equipping teachers to educate students about the risks of using tobacco; the influences which affect their decision-making processes; and the alternatives to tobacco use.

BEAT provides an in-school mentoring program designed to educate and prevent tobacco use; in-classroom tobacco prevention presentations suitable for middle school students; conducts in-school cessation education programs for students who have violated school tobacco use policies, as well as voluntary participants; and supports the development of BUSTED!, a state-wide youth led anti-tobacco movement. The programs are also open to all high school students interested in quitting tobacco use. BEAT is based on approved Center for Disease Control guidelines.

BUSTED! is a youth-led movement involving students that coordinate student prevention efforts locally and in conjunction with county and state tobacco prevention initiatives.

Programs can be presented in a single session or in multiple sessions.

COST: This program is provided at NO COST to schools!
